How Resources and Terrain Affect Population Change: The South of Italy
The South of Italy has a much lower population density than the North of Italy. It is economically a more advanced region benefiting from much better resources and terrain.
1. Climate: The climate in the South of Italy is very dry and hot. This region can often experience droughts making agriculture difficult
2. Relief: The South of Italy is primarily hilly or mountainous land with only 20% of the terrain in low lying areas. This is makes the land difficult to use for development or agriculture
3. Soils: Soils are quite thin in this region and the soils are subject to soil erosion
4. Minerals: There are very limited mineral supplies in the Mezzogiorno
5. Economic Activities: Economic activity is limited in this region. The relief makes it difficult for agriculture of industrial activity to be conducted. Tourism is a growing industry in this region and some volcanic soils support agriculture.
